The Senate Rules Committee Has Appointed Drew Liebert, J.D. to the California Privacy Protection Agency Board

The California State Senate Rules Committee has appointed Drew Liebert, J.D., to the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) Board.

Mr. Liebert is an attorney who served over two decades in various staff leadership positions in the California Legislature. Most recently, he held the position of Chief of Staff to the Senate Majority Leader. Prior to that, he was Chief Counsel to the Assembly Judiciary Committee for 18 years, where he and his attorney staff advised state policymakers on many of the major technology-related measures considered by the California Legislature.

Liebert was a CORO Foundation Fellow in Public Affairs and was named a “California Lawyer of the Year.” He is a graduate of UC Berkeley, a recipient of a Masters in Public Policy from the Claremont Graduate School, and a graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Law.

“We are delighted to have Drew Liebert join the CPPA Board,” said Jennifer M. Urban, Board Chairperson. “His extensive experience and knowledge will be incredibly beneficial to the Agency.”

Mr. Liebert fills the board seat vacated by Ms. Lydia de la Torre. Ms. de la Torre was a member of the CPPA Board from March 2021 until March 2024.

“We appreciate the Senate Rules Committee's appointment of Mr. Liebert to the CPPA Board,” said Executive Director Ashkan Soltani. “He has a distinguished public service career, and we are grateful that he will continue to serve as an instrumental member of our board.”

The California Privacy Protection Agency is governed by a five-member board. Under the Agency's implementing statute, the Board Chairperson and one Board Member are appointed by the Governor; one Board Member is appointed by the Senate Rules Committee; one Board Member is appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly; and one Board Member is appointed by the Attorney General.
