State Regulators Form Bipartisan Consortium to Collaborate on Privacy Issues
SACRAMENTO, CA – Eight state regulators are collaborating on the implementation and enforcement of their privacy laws with the shared goal of protecting consumers. The Consortium of Privacy Regulators is a bipartisan effort that includes state Attorneys General and the California Privacy Protection Agency. The regulators have entered into a memorandum of understanding outlining the group's goals, including facilitating discussions of privacy law developments and shared priorities, with a focus on consumer protection across jurisdictions.
Consumer privacy is more important than ever with rapid changes in technology and uses of personal information. Consumer data has immense value – it can fuel innovation and help serve the needs and desires of customers and clients. However, it is also used to target, exploit, and expose consumers' highly personal information in ways that can be dangerous and costly.
The participating regulators established the Consortium of Privacy Regulators to share expertise and resources, as well as coordinate efforts to investigate potential violations of applicable laws. Although each state has its own law, they all share certain fundamental features to protect privacy with rights to access, delete, and stop the sale of personal information, and similar obligations on businesses. These similarities pave the way for like-minded applications across jurisdictions and give the Consortium the ability to work together on a common goal of promoting the privacy rights of consumers. Commonalities in the laws make this collaboration possible.
“We've seen firsthand how misuse of data can harm Californians, whether it's information about their health, location, kids, identity, and more,” said Michael Macko, the Agency's head of enforcement. “We're proud to collaborate with states across the country to advance consistent, streamlined enforcement of privacy protections to address real-world privacy harms. The Consortium reflects this shared commitment—now and for the future.”
The Consortium holds regular meetings and coordinates enforcement, as appropriate, based on the members' common interests. Members include the California Privacy Protection Agency and state Attorneys General from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, New Jersey, and Oregon.
