Assembly Speaker’s Office Appoints Nicole Ozer to the CPPA Board

News:

SACRAMENTO, CA — Speaker Robert Rivas has appointed Nicole Ozer to the California Privacy Protection Agency Board. Ms. Ozer brings decades of legal experience on issues at the intersection of rights, technology and democracy. She currently serves as the inaugural Executive Director for the Center for Constitutional Democracy at UC Law San Francisco.

“I am thrilled to have Nicole Ozer join the CPPA Board,” said Board Chair Jennifer Urban. “She has extensive legal and policy expertise in the fields of privacy and surveillance, AI, and digital speech and a long history of service to Californians. Her knowledge and experience will be a valuable asset to the agency and to California.

“I would also like to recognize outgoing Board Member Dr. Brandie Nonnecke’s service to CalPrivacy over the past year. She brought deep expertise to her work on the Board and contributed greatly to the agency’s rulemaking, enforcement, and public outreach work. We send good wishes for her latest endeavor.”

Prior to Ozer’s role with the Center for Constitutional Democracy, she was the founding Director of the Technology and Civil Liberties Program at the ACLU of Northern California as well as a Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, a Berkeley Center for Law and Technology Visiting Researcher, and a Stanford Digital Civil Society Lab Fellow. Ozer’s work was most recently recognized with a California Senate Members Resolution for unwavering dedication to defending and promoting civil liberties in the digital world, invaluable contributions to people throughout California, and meritorious service to humanity.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve on the CPPA Board,” said Ozer. “This is a critical time for thoughtful, collaborative work to ensure that the robust privacy rights that are guaranteed to all people in California are real in practice. I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to help support the important work of the agency.”

CalPrivacy is governed by a five-member board. The Governor appoints the Chairperson and one member, and the Senate Rules Committee, the Assembly Speaker, and the Attorney General each appoint one member.
